In the Jewish Museum Berlin, there is a large, grey empty space with an installation by Menashe Kadishman entitled ‘Fallen leaves’.
The floor is covered by circular metal pieces each with a face symbolising a person who died through prejudice and inhumanity. Leaves allude to death but also rebirth and the coming of spring. Visitors are invited to walk on the metal pieces, causing deafening vibrations to echo against the concrete walls of the shaft.
Being in there in the cold and having at the forefront of your mind the harrowing images of what you have just read and seen in the rest of the museum really brings to light the severity of the situation, for me especially after being in the Holocaust Tower, as it’s physical feeling as well as emotional empathy. More than just words on paper.
